Safeguarding
People told us staff worked to keep them safe and were aware of their needs before coming to support them. Comments included, ‘’I feel safe with them’’ and ‘’People are introduced to us before they come in on their own.’’
Staff told us they had received safeguarding training and knew how to respond to concerns. One staff member told us they would raise concerns, ‘’Both within the service and outside of the service; (with) management and the local authority.’’ Another staff member said, ‘’ If I had concerns about a client, I would first contact my immediate supervisor within the service. If the concern required external intervention, I would reach out to the relevant healthcare professionals, social services, or emergency services, depending on the nature of the concern.’’
Safeguarding incidents were monitored, and policies and procedures were in place. Safeguarding processes were in place and used by staff to share information with relevant organisations, such as the local authority safeguarding team.
Involving people to manage risks
People told us they were involved in decision making about their care. Comments included, ‘’I feel involved, they ask me if I am alright’’ and, ‘’I like them. I can ask them questions about my care.’’ A relative said, ‘’I am involved in [my loved one’s] care reviews but if I have a I have any problems I just phone the office. They follow things through.’’
Staff had access to people’s care plans and risk assessments through the electronic system. Comments included, ‘’We have detailed records and risk assessments for each client, which are regularly updated. This information helps us to understand and manage potential risks effectively’’ , ‘’We conduct routine checks and assessments to address any potential risks promptly’’ and, ''I receive detailed information about each client’s risks and care plan, which allows me to provide appropriate and safe care.''
The provider had systems and processes in place to help keep people safe including risk assessments. Risk assessments were updated regularly and when things changed. The electronic care planning system meant updates were made instantly. This contributed to the safe management of risk within the service.
Safe environments
We did not look at Safe environments during this assessment. The score for this quality statement is based on the previous rating for Safe.
Safe and effective staffing
People told us they felt staff were competent and had appropriate training to do their job. Comments included, ‘’I love them, they are kind,’’, ‘’We have been very fortunate. They are like a family member now’’ and ‘’They are suitably trained.’’
Staff told us they received enough training to support them in their role. One staff member told us, ‘’I receive regular training that keeps me updated on best practices and new developments in client care.’’ Staff told us they felt well supported to do their job and received supervisions and spot checks.
Staff were recruited safely, and recruitment records reflected this. Procedures were in place to ensure the required checks were carried out on staff before they commenced their employment. This included enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks for adults and reference checks. DBS checks are important because they alert employers to individuals who are barred from working with people who receive a regulated activity. Staff training was in place to ensure staff had the necessary skills to do their job, this included a comprehensive induction and shadowing before starting work with people. Ongoing training and support were in place. The registered manager was involved in checking competency of staff.
