Our current view of the service

The Jessie May Trust is a registered charity which offers respite and end of life support to families of children with life limiting illnesses by providing specialist nursing and personal care to children and young people aged 0-19 years old in their own homes. We conducted an evidence-based desktop assessment of the service from 14 March 2024 with remote interviews with staff and families from 21 March 2024 to 16 April 2024. We reviewed the safe, effective, responsive and well-led key questions. All key questions reviewed were rated as good. However, the provider should improve quality assurance systems and processes so actions are clearly recorded and progress monitored. The provider should without delay implement a policy to support their risk management framework.

Children’s health, safety and well-being were central to the care received. Parents told us they felt safe leaving their children with Jessie May Trust nurses and were confident in their training. Families told us handovers to nurses were always completed and they saw the same core team at visits. One person we spoke with described their child as “happy and calm” when being cared for by Jessie May Trust staff and most families we spoke with felt nurses knew their child’s likes and dislikes well. Parents told us children were given choice in their care and nurses supported the well-being of the whole family at home and during admissions to hospital. Comments we read and heard from the people using the service included, the service “had been absolutely life changing”, people told us they were “very happy with no concerns” and that Jessie May Trust “is excellent, however, we would like more visits”.
