Caring
People were consistently supported to make decisions and to be in control of their own care. People told us, “I make all my decisions, daily,” and, “My care plan has been discussed with me, I make changes.” Care plans reflected people’s views and had been regularly reviewed. Staff knew people well and supported them to remain as independent as possible. Staff spoke positively about the people they supported. One staff member told us, “People know their own minds and what they like and don’t like. What they want is what counts.” People described being encouraged to express their views and said that staff respected their ideas. One person said, “I always go the resident’s meetings all the time, we all do, everyone attends.”

Independence, choice and control
Staff and the registered manager knew people well and demonstrated a clear understanding of their individual needs and preferences. Staff gave examples of what was important to people. For example, a staff member described the importance of worship for one person and how they were supported to attend services regularly. Another staff member told us about a person for whom routine was important saying, “They like a certain routine with personal care including have creams applied.” Staff spoke positively about supporting people with activities they enjoyed. One staff member said, “People know their own minds and what they like and don’t like. What they want is what counts.” Examples were given of improved outcomes for people. Staff had supported a person with a physiotherapy programme to improve their mobility and this meant they were able to be more independent in accessing the local community.
People consistently described having support to make decisions and to be in control of their own care and treatment. Their comments included “I make all my decisions, daily,” and, “My care plan has been discussed with me, I make changes.” People told us staff supported them to be as independent as possible. One person said, “I couldn't do much when I first came here, I wanted to do more and they let me.” People were encouraged to express their views and they told us staff respected their ideas. One person said, “I always go the resident’s meetings all the time, we all do, everyone attends.” People said staff always checked with them before providing care or support. One person said, "They do ask me before helping, there is nothing they don’t ask my permission for. " People said staff knew them well and understood their needs and preferences. One person said, "They know all of our individual personalities, it’s a good thing, we are all different."
Care plans person centred and demonstrated involvement of people in their choices and care planning. Systems supported people and relatives to be involved and give their views including having regular care plan reviews. Feedback was proactively sought from people with the use of questionnaire and the information gathered was used to make improvements. There was positive planning of activities and community activities relevant to people at the service. Examples: people had made choices about art classes and bowling tournaments. People were able to go out in the local community eg to local shops and services and to attend the church.
