People did not always have choice and control of their lives. We found examples where people had not been offered choice and staff indicated there were some restrictions in place. The registered manager had identified the need for an increase in activities being offered at the service and was actively recruiting a designated member of staff.

Independence, choice and control

People did not always have choice and control of their lives. We found a number of examples where people’s day to day choices were not considered. An example was shared by a person who said they did not like showers and preferred to have a bath, however staff had told them it was easier for them to have a shower and as a result were not having baths.

On the whole, staff told us they felt people had control of their lives, however some staff felt there were restrictions in place. For example, staff shared that people had to go to bed by 10pm due to the night staff coming on duty. Staff shared they felt uncomfortable with this due to people expressing a want to stay awake later.

On the day we visited the service, one person expressed they did not want to eat the meal being offered. The staff member did not suggest an alternative or offer something else but said ‘you like it, you normally eat it’. The person started to eat but then, at the end of the meal, continued to say they had not wanted it.

The registered manager and provider told us they not aware of the concerns expressed by people or staff. They confirmed they would take action to improve the process to ensure people were provided with choice and their preferences upheld. This was to be reinforced with staff. We noted there were limited arranged activities at the service due to a vacancy in the staff team but staff had access to a variety of equipment to support and engage people with. The registered manager was actively recruiting a designated person to take a lead with regards to activities.
