During a routine inspection

There were 29 people living at the home at the time of our inspection. This included nine people who were using the residential part of the service,10 people receiving intermediate care and seven people receiving step down care. There were no people receiving respite care at the time of our inspection.

During our visit we spoke with seven people who were receiving care. All of these people spoke highly of the care they were receiving and of the kindness and warmth of the staff who cared for them. One person told us "we have a laugh, you've got to laugh haven't you? It makes me forget my aches and pains". Another person told us "I'm content, they do all they can to make me comfortable".

We spoke with nine staff members. Our discussions confirmed to us that staff were supported to work appropriately with the people they cared for. Staff were trained, regularly supervised and appraised and provided with support and guidance.

People living at the service told us they felt safe and comfortable and that they knew how to make a complaint if they needed to. One person said "they treat me like family, I only have to ask"

During our visit we observed and heard staff speaking appropriately and pleasantly to people who lived at the service and to each other. The tone of voice used was calm and friendly. There was lots of laughter. People appeared to be content and happy.

During a routine inspection

There were 29 people living at the home at the time of the inspection. During our visit we spoke to 14 people and made observations throughout the visit.

We spoke to nine people who were receiving residential care who told us they were very "happy" at the home. One person said "It brings tears to my eyes when I talk about it here as I am so happy and I never wanted to go into a home".

We noted on the six care plans that we reviewed that each person had a personal profile and appropriate risk assessments. This ensured that people were receiving safe care that was was appropriate to their individual needs. We noted that staff completed regular checks on people's care throughout the day. We observed in the annual client surveys that a rating of 100% had been given to the meeting of people's privacy and dignity needs. One person said "I cannot recommend this place highly enough, the care is excellent and the staff are just wonderful".

We observed that there as a robust complaints process in place too ensure that people at the home experienced safe and appropriate care.

People at the home told us they felt "safe". Two people said that the staff were very kind to them and made them feel secure. One person said "Its nice to be in an environment that's so helpful".

During an inspection in response to concerns

All of the people that we spoke with were happy with their care at St Kilda and said they had all the care and support they need.

Some people told us they were able to manage the majority of their healthcare needs independently, whilst others said they asked staff for support. People said that they felt their care was coordinated well and explained that should they need any further support or care, this was arranged by staff, which then followed the guidance and advice given by the healthcare professionals.

When we spoke to them about the staffing at the home, people told us that they liked the staff who worked with them and trusted them to look after them. They said:

"The staff are very good and look after me".

'They are all good really. They work hard'.

One person who had been at St Kilda for just two weeks respite care said she had enjoyed her stay and would be happy to do so again.

We were told that staff came when people needed them and that they never had to wait long for their bell to be answered.

People told us that the food at the home was very good, and that their rooms were kept clean.
