During a routine inspection

We inspected Lifeways Community Care on a planned, announced inspection. We had informed the service prior to our inspection to ensure that someone would be available to facilitate the inspection. We used an expert by experience to speak to people who used the service and their relative's. We sent out questionnaires to a proportion of people to gain feedback on the service they were receiving from Lifeways

.

We found that people who used the service had consented to their care, treatment and support.

People who used the service told us and we saw that their care and welfare needs were being met. A relative told us: 'The team are excellent, they provide the right support'

We saw records to confirm medicines were managed safely and effectively.

We saw records and staff told us they felt supported to fulfil their role.

The service had systems in place to monitor the quality of the service provided by Lifeways Community Care.

During a routine inspection

During our inspection we spoke with a senior service manager. We were told and received notification that the registered manager had recently left the service. We were told the provider had started the process to recruit a new manager.

After the inspection we contacted people who used the service, their relatives and staff to get feedback about the service.

We found that people's views were taken into account in the way the service was provided and delivered in relation to their care.

One person told us, 'I get on well with the staff and do things I want to do'.

A relative told us, 'The service has been excellent. When our relative moved into supported living, staff were sensitive to her needs. They were fantastic'.

We found that people's care and treatment was delivered in line with their individual needs and ensured their safety and welfare.

We found that people who used the service were protected from the risk of abuse, because the provider had taken reasonable steps to identify and prevent abuse from happening.

Staff we spoke with told us they had received appropriate training to undertake their work competently. We found that appropriate checks were undertaken before people started work.

We found that there was a robust system for ensuring ongoing quality assurance within the service.

We looked at five outcomes and found that Lifeways Community Care (Walsall) was compliant in all five outcome areas.

15 February 2011 and 18 September 2012

The people who use the service were unable to tell us about their experiences due to their disabilities. So we spent time observing their interaction with staff and spoke to staff and visitors.

People are offered choices in their lives, which helps to promote their self esteem and well being.

Staff told us they support people in the way the person wants to be and to meet their individual needs.

Staff are well supported so they know how to meet the individual needs of the people who use the service.

Staff told us that they had the training they need to be able to support the people using the service safely and to meet their needs and achieve their goals.

Staff told us what people's individual needs are and how they support them.

Staff communicate well with other professionals so to ensure that people's needs are met.

Staff told us, 'I enjoy my work, we can rely on one another, there are good support networks, very good training and staff work as a team across the service.'

'It's a very rewarding job, all staff are very enthusiastic.'

'I love my job, it's rewarding to see people doing things and becoming more independent.'

We saw that people lived in clean, homely and comfortable environments that meet their individual needs and help them to be as independent as possible.

Staff told us that there are regular 'spot checks' to ensure they are supporting people appropriately to meet their needs.

We saw that there was information provided about how people could make a complaint about the home. This included pictures, making it easier to understand.

We saw that records were organised so that information could be found easily.
