People had risk assessments in place for all their care, nursing and support needs. Risk assessments were completed with people’s involvement and supported them to be independent and take risks as they wished in the safest way possible. Environmental risk assessments and robust utility checks were in place and complete.

Involving people to manage risks

People told us they felt safe in the care and support they received. One person told us, “I feel very safe here, even though we are not with our own family, we have family here.”

Staff knew people’s risks well. Staff told us specific risks certain people faced and how they worked to reduce or remove the risk. Risk taking included where people wished to make unwise decisions, careful consideration and planning together helped to keep people as safe as they could be.

We observed many kind and respectful interactions between people and staff. There were natural and genuine connections between them, staff knew people well.

Risk assessments were person centred and stored on the providers electronic care planning system. Risk assessments were clear and identified the steps staff needed to take to reduce or remove the risks to people. Assessments were updated regularly or as things changed.

Safe environments

People told us they felt safe in the home and enjoyed having their personal belongings and treasures with them. One person told us, “I have everything I need here; I wasn’t sure what it would be like coming here, but I am happy.”

Staff were knowledgeable about safety within the home. Staff told us they received health and safety training, this included both theory and practical fire safety training.

We observed the environment to be clean, free from clutter and well equipped. Updates and improvements to fire safety within the home were completed.

There was a clear and organised system in place to ensure all equipment, utility and environmental checks were carried out in accordance with relevant legislation. A dedicated member of staff had responsibilities for ensuring checks were carried out, these included, fire alarms, gas safety, electrical checks and water standards. All equipment used to support people to move around the home were tested at the frequency required by law.
