People received kind and respectful care. People told us they were actively encouraged to express their views, wishes, preferences and choices regarding their support. We received positive feedback showing staff were responsive to people's requests, and made sure people got the support they wanted.

Independence, choice and control

Staff respected people's rights and offered choice and control wherever possible. One staff member told us, “People should be supported with decisions making and given to the correct information to make their own decision.” Another staff member said, “We never assume someone doesn't have capacity. It's designed to protect and empower each individual to have the ability to make their own choices.”

Everyone we spoke with told us the care people received at Hillside Care Home was good and that people’s independence was promoted and that they had choice and control over their own care. One person said, “The staff are very nice and helpful. I have [healthcare condition] so staff cut up my meal for me as I cannot do it. The staff are kind.” Another person told us, “They leave you in bed with the call bell across you if you need to call it's at hand.” People’s relatives also told us they were well supported by staff. One relative told us, “I would not hesitate to recommend Hillside Care Home, primarily for the support, care and compassion they have shown my [family member].” Another relative commented, All members of staff present a very kind and caring and sensitive to my [family member’s] varying needs and moods.”

Care plans documented how people liked to receive their care and how their independence could be promoted. People were supported and encouraged to express their views and were involved in decisions about their own care and the support they received.
