During a routine inspection

We were unable to ask people about their views of living in the home because of their complex communication needs. We looked at the care records for two people and spoke with staff about those people's needs. We found care plans were informative and personalised to the individual, reflected people's needs and were regularly reviewed. Activities were individualised and relevant to people's needs.

Care plans detailed people's needs, likes and dislikes and how they communicated their wishes. We saw that staff had a good understanding of people's needs and used this knowledge to enable people to make their own day-to-day decisions about their care.

There were enough qualified, skilled and experienced staff to meet people's needs. Care was provided in an environment that was safe, well maintained and met people's needs. The provider had a complaints procedure in place and this was made available to people who used the service and their families and representatives.

During a routine inspection

People living at the Briars had limited clear verbal communication. Staff had got to know people's preferred communication methods and how each person expressed their thoughts and feelings.

We observed that staff communicated well with people and understood what individuals meant by different sounds and gestures. We saw staff supporting people to make decisions about their daily lives and be independent around their home. People were observed moving freely around their home accessing the lounge, their bedrooms and the garden. There was a calm and relaxed atmosphere in the home and respectful interaction between people and staff.

A relative of one of the people living in the home told us that they were very happy with the staff and the facilities in the home. The relative said "very good service, they always contact us and our son is very happy living here".
