Kindness, compassion and dignity
It was evident from how people spoke about their staff that they felt respected and cared for. One person said, “I think the carers know me pretty well and they take an interest in my flower arranging. They have a bubbly personality and talk to me a lot and about my hobbies.” Another person said, “I think the carers are easy to get on with and I feel very relaxed and talk about anything to them. They understand what’s important to me. They know what I need and don’t need.”
A staff member said, “To promote dignity, I ask my client to choose what they would like to wear for the day, I offer choices for breakfast and always try to make food look tasty and healthy as much as possible.” “I engage in conversations; I like to ask what the person is going to do for today, if they have any visitors or plans.” “To ensure privacy I close blinds or shut curtains and close doors while supporting people with personal care.”
