Date of Assessment: 5 to 18 December 2024. The service is a residential service providing support to younger adults living with physical disabilities, learning disabilities or autistic spectrum disorder. We have assessed the service against ‘Right support, right care, right culture’ guidance to make judgements about whether the provider guaranteed people with a learning disability and autistic people respect, equality, dignity, choices, independence and good access to local communities that most people take for granted. At our last inspection the service was in breach of regulations regarding safeguarding. The service had made improvements and is no longer in breach of regulations. Managers now made sure procedures were followed and when concerns were raised appropriate actions were taken. Staff understood and managed risks. Some additional information and control measures were found to be missing from some documentation. This was rectified during the assessment. There were sufficient and consistent staff to provide personalised care and support. Managers made sure staff received training. Staff supporting 1 person with a delegated task had not had their competency assessed by a health care professional. This was rectified during the assessment. The service had a good learning culture. Managers investigated incidents. People were protected and kept safe. Staff managed medicines well. Staff worked with all agencies involved in people’s care for the best outcomes. Staff made sure people understood their care to enable them to give informed consent. Staff involved those important to people to make decisions in people’s best interests where they did not have capacity. People were treated with kindness and compassion. People were involved in decisions about their care. The service provided information people could understand. Leaders and staff had a shared vision and culture based on listening, learning and trust. Leaders were visible and staff felt supported by them.

People's experience of the service

Updated 26 November 2024

People and relatives were happy with the care their loved ones received. Comments included, “This is ideal place for my relative, we are happy with the care, it is perfect place for [relative]”, “I can only say good things about Red Gables because it is a good place, small and well run, I would not ask for anything more” and “I am not sure if anything could be done better.” People and relatives were involved in the assessment of their needs and in decisions about their care. Throughout our visits we observed staff to be kind, caring and supported people to be as independent as possible. Some people could not directly tell us about their experience. We used observation to assess their experiences of care. This approach showed people were included and listened to and staff consistently interacted positively with them. Relatives told us their loved ones were safe. Comments included, “We know she is safe and with staff to support her”, “We are happy with all the support she has, and she is safe there” and “I trust them completely.” People received care from knowledgeable staff who treated them as individuals. Comments from relatives included, “They seem [to have] plenty of staff and they do job well” and “Care is excellent and carers I know them well-all nice and polite, I think they do have enough knowledge and practice to support my relative well”. Staff supported people to take positive risks to enable their independence and empowered them to make their own choices using their preferred method of communication. People were supported by staff to take part in and enjoy activities and hobbies within the local community.
