People received high quality care and support that promoted and encouraged their independence. People had control over how their care was provided and were fully included in all decisions relating to their care. This included if any changes to care were needed. Staff spoke positively about their roles. They enjoyed caring for and supporting people and they had a clear focus on improving people’s lives.

Independence, choice and control

The provider had processes in place to ensure that people experienced high quality care that promoted and encouraged their independence. Care plans and risk assessments were regularly reviewed to ensure people’s needs continued to be met, whist ensuring people continued to have maximum choice and control over the care. Regular meetings were held with people and their relatives to ensure people remained happy with their care and changes were made where possible. For example, a person had been unable to do their shopping with staff due to reduced mobility. With the person’s consent, specially adapted taxis were sought and the person was able to go with staff in their wheelchair. This had a positive impact on the person’s wellbeing. The registered manager altered the process for a person to take their medicines. The person had expressed their wish to have staff leave their medicines out for them so they could take them at a time that was convenient for them. The registered manager risk assessed this process and made the change. This helped the person to maintain their independence with their medicines.

All of the people and relatives without exception spoke positively about the quality of care and support provided by staff. All praised staff with many stating staff regularly went “above and beyond” what they would expect from care staff. A relative said, “The care provided enables my 100 year old [family member] to continue living independently at home and it provides me with peace of mind. The interesting chats that the carers have daily with [my family member] go a long way to alleviate the day to day loneliness they inevitably feel. They are more than happy to discuss ‘the past’, and these conversations enable [my family member] to contribute, giving them a sense of worth and purpose. The staff went well over and above the call of duty on and around [my family member’s] 100th birthday, giving them cards, presents and a tea party. They also gave [my family member] a printed photobook of the tea party, which they treasure.” Another relative said, “All the staff are very kind and caring they will always go above and beyond the role. They will nip off to the local shops if [my family member] needs anything. They will take time to sit with [my family member] and chat which means a lot to us as a family and them.” A third relative said, “The carers do talk to [my family member] mum about their life, they are considerate and compassionate allowing [my family member] to reminisce. The staff always have time, even at times lingering at the end of their day. [My family member] can often be confused and much patience is needed. The positive impact of that is the fact that I can relax knowing [my family member] is being well looked after. One time a carer stayed until I arrived as [my family member] was not feeling well, which was lovely considering that they do have time constraints.” We also viewed numerous compliments and thank you cards that had been sent to the provider’s office. These all detailed the high quality, person-centred and caring approach of staff.

Staff spoke passionately about how they supported people with the aim of improving their lives wherever possible. They focused on promoting independence wherever possible and supporting people to maintaining control of their own lives. A staff member said, “We always promote independence and fully believe if a client can do something even if it is only washing their face then they should be supported to do this, so their independence isn't being taken from them.” A second staff member said, “I also promote independence by allowing the individual to do as much as they are able to, it’s important not to take that away from them, to go at their pace.” Another staff member person told us about a person who had wanted to be able to leave their home, but their physical condition made this difficult. The staff member said, “On many occasions I took out a person who was over a 100yrs old. They were housebound and their mobility was not good and very slow. So carefully with their consent we went out in their wheelchair, and they always said it was lovely to feel the warm sun on their face. We used to stop so they could hear the birds singing and they said how lovely it was. On occasions we saw their neighbours in their gardens, and they liked to stop and have a chat with them.” This thoughtful approach from this staff member had a significantly positive impact on the person’s life.
