Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

The service always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect. We received examples of positive feedback about staff kindness. We heard examples of where staff had been very thoughtful about how they could make a difference to people. One family member told us, “Really kind and caring, I visit everyday and the staff are just amazing.” Another relative said, “Staff are kind and compassionate.” Staff told us, “It is a caring environment. The whole team work together and it’s a lovely home.” Staff said that they use “About Me” forms which record information about people and their interests, background, occupation, hobbies and preferences, this helps them to form connections with people and encourage them to chat and feel at home. Health professionals told us that staff know people well and are caring and kind. One said, “When I visit, they [staff] are respectful and kind to the residents.” Another comment made was, “They know the resident very well, they seem well informed.” We observed staff showing concern and compassion for people they were supporting. Staff were thoughtful and kind when assisting people at meal times and to attend activities, and ensured their clothing was rearranged as they moved or got up, in order to protect their dignity. We saw staff engaging with people positively and using distraction techniques when needed when people became emotional.
