Whitwell Park is a care home providing nursing and personal care for up to 34 people who have a learning disability or autism or other associated and complex needs across six separate units, each of which has separate adapted facilities. We carried out this assessment following a serious incident to ensure the service provided safe care to people. We completed unannounced on-site visit on the 25th of November. The service had no Registered Manager. However, they were actively recruiting to fill the post. The service was led by a Regional Manager and Nominated Individual. Care provided was safe and delivered by staff who knew people well. People were happy with the care they received. Policies and procedures were in place to support good practise. Staff worked collaboratively with partner agencies, including the Local Authority to improve staff practices and peoples experience of care. Managers had not been reporting notifiable safeguarding events to external agencies. However, the leaders promptly rectified the issue following our feedback. We assessed the service against ‘Right support, right care, right culture’ guidance to make judgements about whether the provider guaranteed people with a learning disability and autistic people respect, equality, dignity, choices, independence and good access to local communities that most people take for granted.
