Background to this inspection

We carried out this inspection under Section 60 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 as part of our regulatory functions. This inspection was planned to check whether the provider is meeting the legal requirements and regulations associated with the Health and Social Care Act 2008.
As part of CQC’s response to the coronavirus pandemic we are looking at the preparedness of care homes in relation to infection prevention and control. This was a targeted inspection looking at the infection control and prevention measures the provider has in place.
This inspection took place on 17 February 2021 and was announced.

Abbeydale Residential Care Home is situated in the small village of Ilkley. Bedrooms were spread over three floors and most had en-suite bathrooms. There were several communal areas and a large private garden with seating and sheds and out houses. On the day of our inspection 32 people were living at the service.
Every item delivered to the service such as post, food deliveries and family parcels were placed in an outside ‘delivery’ area to undergo a full decontamination process before any items enters the premises.
All staff had access to a secure outdoor building to leave personal items such as shoes and coats. Therefore, reducing the risk of cross contaminations into the building.
Staff personal protective equipment (PPE) and uniforms were supplied and cleaned daily by the provider these uniforms included items such as, a full body cover suite (if ever required), face coverings, glasses and daily hand sanitisers which was refilled by the providers.
Cleaning schedules had been doubled since the start of the pandemic, to ensure all high touch areas were cleaned and full deep cleans happened regularly.
The provider purchased a vast amount of PPE to ensure staff would always be protected, whilst also identifying extra items such as multiple air purifiers for dining and lounge areas, air circulating fans for people’s rooms and hands-free thermometers for staff.
Two garden pods had been designed and built during lockdown, each had a warm and welcoming ambience with heating, whilst also having the appropriate risk assessments and policies in place to enable people to be visited by their relatives and friends..
