During an assessment under our new approach

We had previously undertaken an onsite assessment of Claremont Dental Surgery - Wigan on 23 May 2024 under Section 60 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 as part of our regulatory functions. We found the registered provider was not providing safe and well-led care and was in breach of regulations 15 and 17 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014. We undertook a follow-up, onsite assessment on 12 November 2024. This assessment was carried out to review the actions taken by the registered provider to improve the quality of care and to confirm that the practice was now meeting legal requirements. We found the practice had met regulations. The practice had systems to manage risks. Recruitment procedures reflected current legislation. Infection control procedures followed published guidance. Patients’ care and treatment was provided in line with current guidance. Patients were treated with dignity and respect. At the time of our assessment, we found that patients could access care, support and treatment when required. There was effective leadership and a culture of continuous improvement. Further improvements should be made to ensure all outstanding actions from the fire safety risk assessment are completed. Further improvements should be made to systems to review, investigate and document incidents and accidents. Claremont Dental Surgery is in Wigan and provides private dental care and treatment for adults and children. The practice also provides NHS orthodontic care for children. At the time of assessment there was ramp access to the rear of the practice and car parking spaces were available near the practice. The practice had 5 treatment rooms. During the assessment we spoke with 4 dentists, 1 dental nurse and the practice manager.

We carried out this on-site announced assessment on 23 May 2024. We found the practice had not met all regulations. The practice could improve systems to manage risks. In particular, risks associated with fire and legionella. Recruitment procedures reflected current legislation. Infection control procedures followed published guidance. Patients’ care and treatment was provided in line with current guidance. Patients were treated with dignity and respect. At the time of our assessment, patients could access care, support and treatment when required. Improvements could be made to leadership and oversight to ensure a culture of continuous improvement is embedded. Claremont Dental Surgery - Wigan provides private dental care and treatment for adults and children. The practice also provides NHS orthodontic care for children. At the time of our assessment, the dental team included 4 dentists, 6 qualified dental nurses, a trainee dental nurse, a receptionist and the practice manager. The practice had 5 treatment rooms. During the assessment we spoke with 4 dentists, 3 dental nurses and the practice manager. We identified regulations the provider was not complying with. Full details of the regulations the provider was not meeting are within the quality statement section of the report. We have asked the provider for an action plan in response to the concerns found at this assessment.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with a sample of patients who had visited the practice during our inspection.

Patients told us they were given information about their treatment and knew what to expect. Most of the people we spoke with had been at the practice for many years. They all explained that they felt the level of service was overall very good. Everyone stated they were always consulted and they gave full consent about their treatment and check-ups. Everyone told us they were happy with the level of service and care offered.

People were positive about the service. They provided various comments such as: "Fine service"; "Really relaxed, been coming here for years" and "On the whole, good."
