During an inspection in response to concerns

We visited the practice to follow up information of concern received anonymously. We spoke with the provider who was able to demonstrate that good practice was followed at the dental surgery. We did not speak to patients because, due to absence of the nursing staff, patient appointments had been cancelled for the day.

During a routine inspection

As part of our inspection, we spoke with four people who used the service. All reported that they were happy with the practice. We were told that treatment was well explained and opportunity provided to ask questions. We saw that visual materials were available to help explain treatment options. We were told that appointments were easy to make and that staff were flexible in arranging a suitable time. Urgent appointments could be made when required.

People using the service were protected because staff were aware of their responsibilities to safeguard people from harm. There were policies and guidance in place to support staff in their duties. Training also took place to support staff in managing medical emergencies. Emergency medication was in place, should it be required, as well as emergency oxygen and a defibrillator.

The arrangements in place for infection control and decontamination of instruments met with the requirements of the Health Technical Memorandum 01-05. Equipment used in the process was regularly checked to ensure that it was working efficiently. There were systems in place to monitor the safety and quality of the service and this included a complaints procedure.
