Our view of the service

We carried out an announced assessment of Kernow Health CIC (KHCIC) on 4 and 5 November 2024. Kernow Health CIC has shareholders from GP practices in the county and manages Cornwall’s NHS 111 and GP out of hours services. The headquarters are based at Cudmore House in Truro, with treatment centres located in Penzance, Helston, Truro, St Austell, Bodmin, Liskeard, Stratton, and Launceston. The organisation also provides a school immunisation service, a children’s eating disorder service and hosts the Cornwall training hub which secures funding to support general practice. These services were not assessed during this onsite assessment. We carried out a focused assessment in response to concerns identified at our previous assessment in March 2022 and information of concern shared with CQC. We previously rated this service as good. We assessed 21 quality statements across the safe, responsive and well led key questions. At this assessment, we found patients were being reviewed and monitored in line with guidelines and staff were knowledgeable within their roles. There was a strong focus on safety, we saw managers investigated concerns. Staff involved people in decisions about their care and treatment and supported them to ask questions. We recognised improvements had been made since the last assessment in March 2022, in relation to the safe management of medicines and equipment. There had also been improvements in the systems and processes for the safe management of Infection Prevention Control (IPC).

People's experience of this service

A recent patient survey showed most people were positive about the quality of their care and treatment. However, whilst our assessment did not find any elements of care not meeting the expected standard, some people had expressed concerns in accessing care, support and treatment in a way that met their needs. We asked the service to share a link with people on their website to enable them to share their feedback with CQC.
