During a routine inspection

During our inspection on 30 April 2013 we reviewed five care plans that evidenced people were fully included in discussions before any assistance was provided. People were asked to sign their agreement to the plan of care and the provider acted in accordance with their wishes.

Staff provided support in the way the person had chosen and people using the service were supported to deal with their own medication in a safe and appropriate way. We had discussions with people using the service and we were told that staff did a good job and knew what assistance the person needed.

Staff received regular training that supported and developed their knowledge regarding the needs of people, ensuring staff had appropriate skills and awareness to meet the individual needs of people who used the service. However, due to recent staff changes, staff had not been able to undertake regular supervision. Staff did tell us that they felt they could speak with a member of senior staff at any time they needed.

During a routine inspection

On the 28 May 2012 we had discussions with people who used Housing 21 services as well as talking with their relatives. Everyone we spoke with told us that staff were caring, considerate and always supported the dignity and well being of people. When we asked about any concerns or worries, we were told that people did feel confident about talking with staff and felt they would be listened to. We were told that the agency had on call numbers and there was always someone on the end of the phone to help.

Everyone told us that they were treated with dignity and respect; one person stated that sometimes it was difficult to understand staff who did not have English as a first language. They explained that this matter had now been resolved but it had been difficult for a while.

Everyone told us that staff tried to maintain a person's independence while considering their dignity and family members were very appreciative of this consideration. They said that staff recognised the balance between support and the need for a person to achieve what they could, without rushing or making people feel they should hurry.
