Effective

Requires improvement

Updated 25 October 2024

We were not assured the service was effective. People were not supported to live healthier lives and people were not involved in processes of planning the menu, they were not asked for their feedback on the meals provided. They were not given a varied diet. The meals offered didn’t cater for peoples specific dietary requirements and this out peoples health at risk. This was a breach of meeting their nutritional and hydration needs.

Supporting people to live healthier lives

Score: 1

One person we spoke with didn’t feel that the service offered a variety of food to meet their vegetarian diet and relied on a friend to bring their meals in. They also expressed that there was insufficient activities within the service and the only thing for them to do is watch the television. Majority of the relatives we spoke with said they could stay for meals but often chose not too. Some relatives felt the portion sizes were “very small” and that “the food is beige” One person raised concern that their relative had lost a lot of weight and that they weren’t on a specialised diet.

Staff couldn't explain fully how they check that people's food and drink is the correct consistency for their required specialised diet. When we brought this to the services attention they had staff complete training around this. However follow up visits to the service identified that this is still an ongoing issue and the service have re-addressed this with staff.

We were not assured that people were supported to live healthier lives. People that were meant to follow specific diets to manage their health were not offered them. People who required hi-protein diets were not supported appropriately to achieve this. We reviewed their menus, and they were not offering a nutritional varied diet. Staff couldn’t inform us how they ensured that people in the service were following the correct diet and consistency of foods due to their risk of choking. There was no evidence of peoples involvement or a relatives in reviewing their health care needs or having their involvement around the planning of meals.
