The scores for these areas have been combined with scores based on the rating from the last inspection, which was good. People were not always supported to live the life that they would choose. Care was not always person centred.

Person-centred Care

People did not feel that care was arranged around their preferences. Instead, care was planned around staff availability and routines of the care home. One person said “they let you do as much as you can. But it’s because they are busy.”

Staff understood how to provide person-centred care. One staff member said ‘It’s about their choice of their care. Remembering it will be different for everyone.’ While staff were able to explain what person-centred care is, people did not feel they received this type of care.

We saw that staff were busy supporting people’s physical needs (like going to the toilet). They therefore did not always have time to engage with people on a person-centred level.

Listening to and involving people

People said they were not always listened to. One person said, “You get pressured to go to bed - I wake up in the middle of the night as I’m too early to bed. I’ve given up arguing. The night staff have to get some people up in mornings - they get me up about 5am and I can’t do anything about it.”

Some staff felt that people were listened to, other staff felt the routines of the home were not led by people’s choice. A staff member said, “In all honesty, I feel it is more the staff’s choice when residents go to bed. I’m not comfortable about that.”
