Equity in access

Regulations met

Staff described the reasonable adjustments they had made to ensure the practice was accessible. A hearing induction loop, large print and alternative information formats, a magnifying glass, ground floor surgeries and a wheelchair accessible toilet area were available to assist patients if required. A number of various languages were spoken by staff which enabled them to support and communicate with non-English speaking patients. For example, Urdu, Hindi, Gujarati, Bengali, Panjabi, Mirpuri and Romanian. Staff were clear about the importance of providing emotional support to patients when delivering care.

Staff had carried out a disability access audit and had formulated an action plan to continually improve access for patients. The practice supported more vulnerable members of society such as patients living with dementia or adults and children with a learning disability. The frequency of appointments was agreed between the dentist and the patient, giving due regard to National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines. The practice provided telephone numbers for patients needing emergency dental treatment during the working day and when the practice was not open. At the time of our assessment, patients who needed an urgent appointment were offered one in a timely manner. When the practice was unable to offer an urgent appointment, they worked with their sister practice, Crabtree Dental Practice, to support urgent access for patients.
