Equity in access

Regulations met

Staff described the reasonable adjustments they had made to ensure the practice was accessible. For example, the practice was wheelchair accessible with ground floor surgeries; a hearing induction loop, large print or alternative formats were available and language interpretation services could be accessed when required. Several staff in the practice also spoke additional languages, for example, Urdu, Farsi and Cantonese. Staff were clear about the importance of providing emotional support to patients when delivering care. For example, staff knew their patients well and understood their individual needs. They were proactive in utilising different strategies to put patients at ease. Staff also worked hard in reaching out to the local community to enhance their oral health offering. They visited local primary schools carrying out oral health education sessions to raise awareness of the importance of oral health and provided free toothbrushes. They chose to be part of various pilot projects with the aim of increasing access to dentistry, particularly for hard-to-reach patients. For example, they ran an urgent dental clinic every week with the aim of getting patients who have very little access to dentistry, out of pain. We heard of plans in place to support local care homes by providing the base, equipment and staff to run a domiciliary service.

Staff had carried out a disability access audit and had formulated an action plan to continually improve access for patients. The practice supported more vulnerable members of society such as patients living with dementia or adults and children with a learning disability. The practice displayed its opening hours and provided information on their website and patient information leaflet. The frequency of appointments was agreed between the dentist and the patient, giving due regard to National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines. The practice provided telephone numbers for patients needing emergency dental treatment during the working day and when the practice was not open. Staff took part in an emergency on-call arrangement with other local practices and patients were directed to the appropriate out of hours service. At the time of our assessment, patients who needed an urgent appointment were offered one in a timely manner. When the practice was unable to offer an urgent appointment, they worked with partner organisations to support urgent access for patients.
