The inspection
We carried out this inspection under Section 60 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (the Act) as part of our regulatory functions. We checked whether the provider was meeting the legal requirements and regulations associated with the Act. We looked at the overall quality of the service and provided a rating for the service under the Health and Social Care Act 2008.
As part of this inspection, we looked at the infection control and prevention measures in place. This was conducted so we can understand the preparedness of the service in preventing or managing an infection outbreak, and to identify good practice we can share with other services.

The inspection was carried out by one inspector.
Service and service type
Khaya Project (Wellesley Road) is a care home providing care and support for people with mental health needs. People in care homes receive accommodation and nursing or personal care as single package under one contractual agreement. CQC regulates both the premises and the care provided, and both were looked at during this inspection.
This service is required to have a registered manager. A registered manager is a person who has registered with the Care Quality Commission to manage the service. This means that they and the provider are legally responsible for how the service is run and for the quality and safety of the care provided.
At the time of our inspection there was a registered manager in post. The registered manager was not available to support us with the inspection. We were supported by the senior carer.

The inspection was unannounced and took place on 22 March 2022.
What we did before the inspection
We reviewed the information we already held about the service. This included their registration report, notifications and inspection reports under the providers previous registration. A notification is information about important events, which the provider is required to tell us about by law. We used all of this information to plan our inspection.
During the inspection.
During the inspection, we spoke with a senior care staff, two people and observed interaction between staff and people. We reviewed documents and records that related to people’s care and the management of the service. We reviewed three care plans, which included risk assessments. We also looked at other documents such as medicine management, training and quality assurance records
After the inspection
We continued to seek clarification from the provider to validate evidence found. We looked at policies and staff files. We also spoke to the registered manager.
