People participated in an assessment process prior to admission to the home to ensure their needs and preferences could be met. People’s food and drink needs were met and there was access to healthcare professionals as and when required. Signs of decline in people’s health was monitored and staff received a regular handover of peoples changing needs to ensure continuity of care.

Delivering evidence-based care and treatment

A relative told us that staff were quick to notice a decline in health for their relative, staff completed a test, sought medical assistance and treatment was promptly given to prevent further decline. One relative noticed that their relative was struggling to see their food, this was promptly addressed by staff who arranged for an assessment to be completed to establish what level of support might be needed going forward. People told us they ate well and mostly enjoyed the food. One person told us that the kitchen were listening to people and “On occasion [staff member] spices the menu a bit.” One person told us “I do enjoy my food here.” while another said, “I do eat well.” Two people mentioned they would like to see a specific food on the menu but it was unclear if they had raised this with the provider who was seeking this type of feedback via resident meetings and the kitchen staff did chat with people in the home about their preferences. Staff demonstrated good practice when supporting people to eat, they ensured people had a choice of foods and sat and spoke with people while supporting them.

Staff followed good practice to ensure people were well supported. One staff member told us how staff used information gathered at pre assessment and admission to understand people’s likes and dislikes and by talking to the person. “Choice is always given, with what to wear, menus and show plates [a visual example of the choice of food to assist people to choose], all day to day living choices, when to get up or go to bed.” Staff told us that people could have alternatives to the menu if they preferred or were not keen on something on the menu. The kitchen staff told us they sought feedback on the menu and food quality by visiting people individually and that the menu was changed monthly based on that feedback. A staff member told us that people’s dietary needs were met as staff had access to information in care plans and on a quick reference board in the kitchen which included modified texture diets, allergies and health conditions such as diabetes. Staff told us they had handover at each shift change where any changes to people’s health or any additional needs or preferences were shared with them.

People’s care plans were produced with their input and detailed how to support them and ensure their needs were met. Health conditions, allergies and any food preference, choice or modified food related needs were recorded for staff guidance. Regular reviews included ensuring people’s health care needs or changes were discussed, family and advocates were included in this process. Referrals to professionals such as dieticians or speech and language specialists were made when needed and their guidance was followed by staff and leaders.
