Independence, choice and control
People told us they were happy with the care they received. People were supported by staff who were kind, caring and respectful. People told us they could make everyday decisions, such as when to get up and when to have a shower. They said they felt empowered, their independence was supported, and they had choice in relation to their care and support. People we spoke with said they weren’t sure what activities were happening on the 2nd day of our visit. One person said, “They do ask me if I want to join in activities, but I don’t.” Relatives told us they thought activities took place regularly but weren’t sure.
Staff understood people had the right to have choice and control over how their care needs were met. They encouraged individuals to make choices for themselves.
One person told us the service had sought advice from Speech and Language Therapy regarding their food. They said, “They advised a pureed diet but I disagreed with that, I'm not a choke risk I just need it textured so we discussed it and filled out paperwork to reflect my wishes.” This showed the service listened and respected people’s views and choices. During our 3 visits we saw activities were not followed as per the timetable that was published on noticeboards and it appeared ad hoc. On the upstairs unit the activity planner was for the wrong day.
Processes were in place to ensure care plans included information to promote people’s independence, choice and control in a safe manner and people told us they were involved in decision making. We discussed activities with the management team, who were aware that plans were “vague”, and this was an area they were working on with the activity team.
