Effective
Staff knew how to respond to people’s health and social care needs. For example, recognising changes in a person’s physical health. Staff were able to speak confidently about the care they gave and understood how they contributed to people’s health and well-being. People were supported to see healthcare professionals when they needed. We saw evidence of health and social care professionals’ involvement in people’s individual care on an on-going basis. For example, GP, community nurse and speech and language therapists (SALT).

Supporting people to live healthier lives
People told us staff had acted appropriately when they had needed support from health professionals or when they had fallen. One person told us, “I’ve fallen a few times after falling asleep in my chair. They send for the paramedics to check me over and once I had a CAT scan. The home staff contact the appropriate people and arrange for prescriptions.” People told us they had confidence that staff would contact a doctor when they needed. One person said, “If I needed a doctor, they would definitely get one for me. I would tell them if I was feeling unwell.” People’s relatives told us staff would let them know if their relative was unwell.
Staff told us they received training specifically tailored to people’s health needs. For example, dysphagia, diabetes and falls training. Staff described what they would do if a person was to fall and what was in place to prevent falls. Staff described actions they would take when people had lost weight or were having difficulties swallowing. Staff told us they would contact people’s GP and SALT team to arrange an assessment. The registered manager told us they tried to promote healthier lives at the service and promote healthy eating as part of that. They offered fresh fruit and low-fat options and have provided a basket of fruit for the staff. The cook told us about how they ensured people’s needs in relation to their diet, were, met at the service. Where people had lost weight, they ensured they were provided with extra calories and snacks. All diets were provided for, and information was available in the kitchen for staff to refer to.
People were supported to see healthcare professionals when they needed. We saw evidence of health and social care professionals’ involvement in people’s individual care on an on-going basis. For example, GP, community nurse and speech and language therapists (SALT). The registered manager told us they were proactive with regards to promoting healthier living at the service and acted when they recognised concerns. For example, if staff suspected a person was developing symptoms of a urinary infection, staff would be proactive and send a urine test off to the GP for review.
