Independence, choice and control
People told us they were supported to make choices. In relation to food, one person told us, “There is always a choice.” Another person told us it was their “personal choice” about what activities they took part in at the service. Another person told us, “I can get out when I want to.”
Staff promoted people's independence with their daily living skills. Staff explained how they encouraged people to complete tasks they were able to do themselves. Staff told us they explained what support they were going to provide to a person before starting the support. They also gave examples of giving people day to day choices.
People were encouraged to take part in activities. We saw activities were arranged for people to join in with if they wanted to do so. A range of different activities were scheduled throughout the week. People told us, “We play bingo, I really enjoy it” and, “I like to join in the activities.” People were prompted and encouraged to eat by themselves. For example, 1 person was not eating their meal. A member of staff sat with them, encouraged them and supported them to use their fork to eat themselves.
Care plans promoted people’s right to independence and choice. Care plans identified where staff should enable people to do things for themselves where possible. Care plans were reflective of people’s right to choice and were sympathetic to people’s situations and the choices they made around their care.
