Staff spoke positively about the manager and provider of the service. There were a range of systems in place to ensure strong leadership. The registered manager was well supported by the provider to develop in their role. The provider had an appropriate whistleblowing policy in place to support staff to raise concerns. The provider had an appropriate equality and diversity policy in place. There were governance systems in place to monitor the quality of service. The service had an effective audit system in place which assisted them in identifying areas of improvement.

Capable, compassionate and inclusive leaders

Staff spoke positively about the manager and provider of the service. They said they were both approachable, supportive and were visible within the service. Night staff said they saw the manager and provider frequently before they finished their shift. Staff said the team morale was good, with all staff working well together. A member of staff told us, “We’re a good team, organised, and everyone knows what they're doing.”

There were a range of systems in place to ensure strong leadership. These included staff meetings, relative and resident meetings and governance. The registered manager was well supported by the provider to develop in their role.

Freedom to speak up

Staff felt able to speak up. Staff told us they felt supported by their colleagues and manager to bring concerns to their attention. Staff meetings were held, and staff were able to raise any topics or issues they wanted to. A member of staff said, “More people spoke up at the last staff meeting, it was the best one had since I’ve been here. We can air our views about what we think we need to do better; it was good. I think it's down to [manager] and the way they manage.”

Appropriate policies and procedures were in place. The provider had an appropriate whistleblowing policy in place to support staff to raise concerns. Staff reviewed this policy as part of their induction.

Workforce equality, diversity and inclusion

Staff were treated well. Staff said the manager treated them all fairly. The home had a diverse workforce, with different ethnicities.

Governance, management and sustainability

Quality checks were in place. Nurses said they completed daily checks to ensure all medicines had been administered and signed for.

There were governance systems in place to monitor the quality of service. The service had an effective audit system in place which assisted them in identifying areas of improvement. When areas of improvement were identified this was included as part of an action plan and reviewed the following month. Areas for improvement were discussed with staff in both team meetings and supervisions. Observations during the assessment demonstrated service improvements had been sustained. The provider produced an annual quality report which reviewed and summarised all areas of the service. This included what had been achieved and a clear direction for moving forward.
