Staff had developed positive and caring relationships with people which helped them to deliver person centred care to meet people’s individual needs and preferences. Care plans included detailed information on people’s cultural needs, abilities and aspirations. People were able to receive visitors without restrictions in line with best practice guidance. Family members said they could visit their loved one at any time. People were supported to maintain contact with those important to them. Staff we spoke with spoke positively about the support they received from management. Staff had access to regular team meetings and one to one supervision which enabled them to provide feedback about the service and seek any necessary support or guidance.

Independence, choice and control

Families told us that staff knew people well and listened to them. People undertook activities at the service and in the community which supported their independence, health and wellbeing. An activities coordinator was employed full-time who planned 1-1 and group activities, links had been made within the community. We observed people accessing the community to take part in their chosen activities during the first two days of our inspection. There were also activities available in the home should people wish to take part.

Staff told us that people have recently been supported to go on holiday an example was person [A] who hadn’t been on holiday for over 15 years and the last time a trip was planned it was not successful. They were able to enjoy a holiday which included planned activities. Peoples independence was encouraged. Staff told us how people were supported to keep their flats tidy and clean. Staff told us that people often enjoyed baking in their kitchen areas. We observed clean, tidy and personalised living spaces that were individual to peoples tastes and needs. People’s family and friends were free to visit when they wished. There were no restrictions placed on when they could visit the service.

Staff told us they knew people's care and support needs well and we saw this whilst observing staff interactions. Staff were observant of people’s responses, ensuring they had choice and control in relation to their care. Staff followed care plans and were able to tell us peoples likes/dislikes and needs.

Care plans were personalised and contained information on people's likes, dislikes and what was important to them. Risk assessments were in place to support people to be as independent as possible.

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

Staff had good working relationships with their peers and told us management were approachable. One staff member said “Management are approachable and easy to talk to, there is an open door policy. They will help you out and are always looking for ways to improve things. It’s a well-led from the top organisation.”

Staff were supported through formal supervision and appraisal meetings. The provider had systems to help support employee’s wellbeing and provide them with confidential support and counselling if needed. The supervision compliance report showed that staff had received supervisions at the time of the inspection. Staff had the opportunity to provide feedback, raise concerns and suggest ways to improve the service at supervision or informally to management.
