Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

We observed staff to be kind and caring with people living in the service. Staff focused upon supporting people in the way they preferred so that people could have as much choice and control over their lives as possible.

Each person had a key worker who met with them monthly to discuss their support, identify personal goals and work towards achieving them. Staff empowered people to make decisions. Where people were unable to make decisions, this was clearly evidenced through mental capacity assessments and best interest decision making processes.

Staff promoted independence. One staff member said, “Adapting to the individual is key for me as I think that’s very important to enable [staff] to support people in the best way that suits them and keeps them independent.”

Staff supported people so they had control of their lives and how they wished to spend their time. We saw an exchange between a staff member and a person where the person was deciding how they wanted to spend their day.
