Safeguarding
Staff recognised signs of abuse, knew how to act to keep people safe and said they would be confident to report any concerns they might have. “I would raise [any concerns] right away and feel confident to do so. I had to raise something before and it was dealt with right away.”
We observed people and staff interacting with each other. We saw people were comfortable with staff and appeared comfortable to express any anxieties or concerns they might have.
The provider had a safeguarding policy in place. They notified the local authority and CQC of any safeguarding issues when required. The provider had a safeguarding committee to hold oversight of safeguarding within the organisation and share lessons learned. Accidents and incidents were recorded and followed up appropriately. Analysis of any themes and trends took place. Where themes were identified, these were reviewed and any learning was shared across the organisation.
Our observations were positive throughout our visits of people being supported well by staff. Information about safeguarding was available and on display in the office for staff to refer to.
Involving people to manage risks
Our observations were positive throughout the visits. On one occasion we saw a person who became unsettled, partly due to our presence. Staff supported the person competently with reassurance and an approach that was clearly familiar to the person.
Staff recognised the importance of understanding people’s communication styles to reduce people’s anxiety and distress. One staff member said, “[Staff] are here a lot, we know the people well and understand their triggers and how to avoid them. We know what we need to do when anyone becomes upset.”
People were unable to tell us verbally about their experience. We observed interaction between staff and people. Staff created an environment that enabled people to express themselves safely.
Staff were recruited safely and appropriate checks were carried out as required. Staff received regular supervision and training. There were enough staff to meet people’s needs.
