People and family members were positive about the care received at Acorn House. A family member told us, “[Relative] can’t wait to return when they have been away, the staff are very responsive to their needs.” People were supported to access and attend a wide range of activities which included, discos, swimming and day centres. A person told us, “I like going to disco on a Wednesday”. One family member told us, “[Relative] was spending more time in bed, but the staff have managed to introduce more activities and [relative] has now started going swimming.” A health professional told us, “I would like to see the clients engaged in a little bit more structured activity, crafts, cooking etc. They do try to get the clients engaged in meaningful activities outside of Acorn House.” People were encouraged to maintain relationships and contact with friends, family and people important to them. One person told us that they visited their partner regularly and was supported to do this and their care plan reflected this.

The registered manager told us “This is people’s home; they should always be involved in their daily living. Each person is different, we explain risks to the person and accept they might choose to make an unwise decision.” People were encouraged to maintain relationships and contact with friends, family and people important to them. Staff had knowledge about people and their individual needs. Staff understood people had a right to be treated fairly and equally. A staff member told us, “We know the residents and we understand their needs, their triggers and how to support them.” Staff received training in equality and diversity.

People had access to external health and social care professionals as and when they needed them. People’s care records showed they had been supported to access the different areas of health care they needed in a timely way.
