Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

The provider always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect. Everyone we spoke with told us the staff were very kind, caring and respectful. One person told us, “They [staff] are so friendly, I know all their faces, they are really lovely; I have a laugh with them. If they have got a bit of time left, they sit and talk to me. When they are gone, I don’t feel lonely anymore. It makes me not worry; it feels like I have friends.” People and relatives described how staff approach had made them feel dignified and not embarrassed whilst staff provided personal care. A staff member told us, “This is a good service because staff actually care and take time to build relationships with people.”

Treating people as individuals

Score: 3

The provider treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics. Care plans were personalised and reflected people’s wishes, preferences and lifestyle choices. People told us staff knew them well and this was confirmed by relatives. One relative told us, “The staff take time talking with [Name of family member] and really understand their health condition and how to manage periods of distress. They recognise if something is not right with [Name] and advise us if we need to do anything. The communication is excellent.”

Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. People’s care plans detailed their abilities and goals for independence, which helped staff to enable people rather than simply provide care. People told us they had choice and control over their care. One person said, “Staff always ask me what I want; they do anything that needs doing. They are very, very good.”

Responding to people’s immediate needs

Score: 3

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress. A person told us, “They [staff] give me quality care and I feel safe with them. All the staff are very respectful.” Staff response to people’s immediate needs was extended outside of people’s assessed needs and usual place of support. For example, staff supported people to go to hospital appointments and responded out of hours if people were in distress or relatives needed help. Staff also provided support to people whilst they were in hospital to ensure their needs were being met.

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

Score: 3

The provider cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff, and supported and enabled staff to always deliver person-centred care. This was confirmed by staff who told us, “The [registered] manager really supports a healthy work life balance for us. I feel very supported and this creates a really positive culture and great team work.” The registered manager described a culture where staff diversity was recognised and respected and all staff received support and guidance on an individual basis.
