Score: 3

People had control over their lives, they were encouraged to provide regular feedback on the care they received. The registered manager told us people at Alexandra House had monthly committee meetings, residents’ and relatives’ meetings . This meant people and their relatives were able to contribute ideas and put their views forward. A person told us, ‘’I’m on the monthly residents’ meetings. I do attend the meetings when I can, I get to know what happens, I am listened to.”

People were supported to maintain relationships that were important to them. Comments included, “Quite a few residents like to choose their own clothes to wear and make their own choices about what they do during the day. Many go out with family and friends for visits which they really enjoy” , ‘’The relatives are always welcome, there are no restrictions on visiting they just have to sign in for safety. Everyone is always made to feel very welcome with tea, coffee and they use the garden too in the nice weather’’ and ‘’Family and friends visit whenever they like they are always welcome.’’

We observed people being supported with kindness and patience. There was a range of equipment available to support and maximise people’s independence and outcomes from care and treatment.

People were supported to have choice and control over their own care. They were supported to make decisions about their care, treatment, and wellbeing. For example, people had short and long-term goals identified in their care plans, and these were reviewed monthly. This meant there was always a focus for people and staff. Alexandra House produced a monthly newsletter for people, their relatives and staff. We saw the recent issue which had a section titled ‘‘You said, we did 2024’’ which listed actions taken as a result of feedback from people. These included: the introduction of a summer menu, meeting the head chef as well as arranging access to their own care records.
