Our view of the service
The Emergency Department at Gloucester Royal Hospital provides urgent and emergency care for the county of Gloucestershire and surrounding areas and is operated by Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. We undertook an unannounced assessment and onsite inspection of the service on 13 December 2023 following a number of concerns raised by patients, staff and visitors. We reviewed the safe key question. The overall rating for these services is requires improvement. We rated the safe key question as requires improvement because infection prevention and control and safe environments standards were not met. Not all staff had completed infection prevention and control training and we saw evidence that fire safety standards were not being met.
People's experience of this service
We spoke with persons who raised concerns about the service prior to our inspection. They told us that the department was dirty, cubicles were not cleaned between patients, and soiled dressings left on the floor and that split bodily fluids were not cleaned up. A visitor informed us that there had been a fire in the department. This was confirmed by the Trust. Visitors informed us that fire exits were blocked and one had been fastened with a chain.
