Young people we spoke with said they felt safe and supported on the wards and there were enough staff on the wards to ensure activities were never cancelled. Staff we spoke with said they felt safe, well supported and were very proud to be part of the team. Managers were able to adjust staffing levels to take account of increased acuity on the wards. Staff were appropriately trained and had regular supportive supervisions.

Young people told us that activities were never cancelled due to the wards being short staffed. Young people we spoke with said they felt safe and supported on the wards. One young person said “I think the staff are positive and trustworthy, they are nicest people I have ever met. The food is nice and gets a 5 out of 5, the staff also get a 5 out of 5!”

Staffing levels were safe and adequate. Staff told us they were able to undertake activities and one to one sessions with young people. Staff we spoke with said they felt safe and well supported at work. They told us they were very proud to be part of the team. Managers told us they could adjust staffing levels to take account of increased acuity on the wards. We were told there was a staffing review underway to agree the number and skills of staff required to manage the inpatient ward population. Managers told us they had recruited both registered general nurses and a paediatric nurse to ensure physical health needs were identified and managed effectively.

We saw staff supporting young people in a respectful manner throughout the assessment. We saw staff undertaking zonal observations to ensure least restrictive care for young people. The wards had a comprehensive multi-disciplinary team; these included a consultant psychiatrist employed on a locum basis, psychology, occupational therapy, family therapist, social worker, teachers, dieticians, music therapists, and activity coordinators.

The service had low levels of staff vacancies. There had been a very successful recruitment process. The wards had no support worker vacancies or registered nurse vacancies. We looked at staff rotas, the numbers required to provide safe care were achieved. We looked at training records, staff were appropriately trained and had access to specialist training where appropriate. Staff received regular management and clinical supervision in accordance to trust policy.
